Artificial turf replacement on both fields and a new playground surface are among the improvements being done at the decade-old Smith River Sports Complex.
Last November, the local non-profit The Harvest Foundation announced a three-year grant totaling $2.4 million in support of the Axton complex. The grant, which went to complex operator Southern Virginia Recreation Facilities Authority, includes funding for capital improvements as well as operations funding, according to the Harvest website.
“Anytime you have a facility that’s been in operation 10 years, it’s going to need a little tender loving care,” said DeWitt House, senior program officer at The Harvest Foundation.
