Small real estate development lecture coming to NCI Sept. 17

A lecture on small real estate development will be presented Sept. 17 at the New College Institute/Baldwin Building in Martinsville.

R. John Anderson, principal at Anderson/Kim, will discuss the small scale development movement in the presentation that will begin at 6 p.m.

Anderson will discuss financial tools and design parameters to implement middle-scale buildings in regular neighborhoods.

He has more than 30 years of experience in the development industry, in construction, urban design and finance. According to a flyer on the lecture, he has identified “pathways of least resistance” to get a building from concept to reality.

Anderson’s “experience has revealed to him the landmines and opportunities within existing building code, mortgage policy, and zoning practice. Through the years, Anderson has developed what he believes to be a no-brainer for the aspiring small developer: The Form Follows Finance Fourplex. Most importantly, Anderson’s understanding of great urban places ensures that his recommendations for small developers translate into buildings that act as good neighbors,” the flyer states.

Anderson also is a founding member of the Incremental Development Alliance (INCDEV), a not-for-profit group of practitioners who help residents strengthen their neighborhoods by offering training to help aspiring developers begin projects.

The alliance also helps “city champions” identify where policies and practices are becoming unnecessary barriers, and it partners with local organizations to pilot projects that support small development in targeted areas, according to the flyer.

Anderson’s lecture is free, and reservations are not needed to attend.

In addition to the alliance, the program is supported by The Harvest Foundation, American National Bank & Trust Co., Virginia’s Department of Housing and Community Development, Reimagine That Danville and the River District Association.
