Eastman Chemical Company donated a fleet of bikes and helmets to the physical education program at Fieldale-Collinsville Middle School which will allow students to focus not only on fitness but also on safety and learning the rules of the road.
Here’s what students had to say about the addition to their PE experience:
“I race bikes competitively. The last RaceIi was in was a three-person race at Burlington BMX park. 1st place. It’s a great way to stay healthy and gives me something to do besides playing video games.” – William Smith, 8
“It may help those who don’t enjoy other activities and sports we do to get physical activity. It’s always nice to have something different – not a lot of schools have this type of donation.” – Caitlyn Haynes, 8
“It doesn’t limit our exercise. Ppl think of pe we just running walking and lifting weights. Riding bikes instead of walking on the track is an exciting addition to our class. It makes PE more exciting.” – Jenny Castro, 7
“If we excited because it offers us more activities. For cardio now we have the opportunity to ride bikes.” – Princess Perez, 7
The bikes and helmets were purchased from local retailer Chain of Fools, a local store and bicycle repair shop. In the future, school officials hope to add a Bike Smart unit to physical education classes.
