MARTINSVILLE–Her teams have competed and won all over, from Maryland to Washington D.C. On Thursday night, Martinsville High teacher Melissa Cassell won a competition of her own, taking home the award as the district’s Teacher of the Year.
“Mrs. Cassell gets to know every student in her class [personally],” said Martinsville High principal Ajamu Dixon. “[She] is able to see exactly what each child brings to the community and her whole teaching approach involves finding and using children’s unique strengths to help them overcome their struggles and develop a positive self-concept.”
Cassell works with the school’s science department, serving as one of the coaches for the MADawgs robotics team. Dixon also told the audience at Martinsville High that the students love her because she is “kind, loving, fun and cares about them. Mrs. Cassell is one of those teachers you come across once in a great while,” he added.
