SmartSTART Business Plan Program Enters Its 10th Year

February 3, 2017

Martinsville, VA (February 3, 2017) The Martinsville-Henry County Economic Development Corporation’s Small Business Division is entering its 10th year of offering a training program specifically to help entrepreneurs and business owners develop solid plans for their business ventures. A $15,000 funding component has been added to this year’s program to help spur growth for its graduates.

The SmartSTART program is a series of classes designed to help entrepreneurs build   the skills needed to create, manage and grow successful businesses. Research has shown that a good business plan can be a crucial step for sensible entrepreneurs, regardless of whether it is a start-up or an established company. It gives a realistic view of the obstacles that may be faced and can often be required to secure funding. A good plan can sometimes even determine whether a business venture is worthwhile. SmartSTART prepares students to make educated decisions through the development of a good plan.

Held over 8 weeks, each session explores a different topic such as research, marketing, financial planning, sales and operational plans and more. In addition, participants will meet with business professionals (lawyers, bookkeepers, insurance specialists, etc.) and seasoned entrepreneurs who can share advice and experienced-based information on running a business.

SmartSTART and its predecessor program FastTrac® have been offered by the EDC since 2007. The program has seen many successful ventures go from conception to thriving entities. Former students include owners of businesses like Casting Logos, ATM Motors, Southern Virginia Properties, Rising Sun Breads, Happy Feet Early Learning Center, CrossFit276, Dawson Photography and many more.

In recognition of its 10th year of offering this type of training, the EDC will also be awarding up to $15,000 in funding for projects of program graduates. Former SmartSTART and FastTrac® students are also eligible to participate.

The classes will be held on Tuesdays only, March 14-May 2 from 5-8:30PM at New College Institute. Seats for the program are limited and you must apply to participate. The cost of the program to participants is $75, refundable upon graduation.
